Summer Heatwave Tips August 01 2018, 0 Comments

Summer has finally arrived in the UK and it has arrived with a vengeance.

Within the past few days, we have seen soaring temperatures, with many of the national press declaring that it was hotter than Sahara.
That was probably a little a bit of an exaggeration, but it certainly felt that hot.

Whilst we do enjoy the warmer weather, higher temperatures does not come without some dangers, including the following:

  • mental confusion –  you may find yourself a bit more forgetful than usual.
  • temperamental electronics – i recently experienced this when my iphone got so hot, simply being in my handbag, that it switched itself with an message on-screen, saying that the phone is literally to hot too function!
  • dehydration – this is one of the causes of mental confusion and forgetfulness, so be sure to drink lots of water.

So how do we stay safe, healthy and happy during this summer heatwave in the UK?  Here are some of my top tips.

  • Drink water – this is so important!  Be sure to get your daily recommended allowance and then some more, to take into account moisture loss from sweat.
  • Cut down on the caffeine.  The heat might make you feel even more lethargic than usual, leading to an increased craving for caffeinated drinks.  However, caffeine is a diuretic and these drinks will leave you more dehydrated than usual.  Best stick to water.
  • Cut down on the alcohol. Alcohol will worsen your dehydration.  Being dehydrated and intoxicated is not fun, and can have serious consequences, so stick to water or fruit juice only.
  • Stay cool.  Get a fan going, open up the windows, throw ajar the door and let some fresh air in.
  • Get wet.  Now is a great time to go swimming or head down to the beach.  It’s fun, healthy and will cool you down.  Can’t make it to the local pool or beach?  Get a garden hose and hose yourself.  No, I am not kidding.
  • Drink water.  I know I have already mentioned this, but seriously, chug, chug chug that water throughout the day.
  • Along the same vein, use our popular Grow It Hair Juice, which infuses your hair strands with nutrient-rich moisture, protects your hair from sun damage, prevents colour fade (if you dye or bleach your hair), lessens dehydration and breakage of the hair and fights frizz.
  • Look out for the vulnerable:  this includes the elderly, the sick, the very young.  Check in on your elderly neighbours who live alone.
  • Keep your pets hydrated by ensuring they have ready access to clean, cool, drinking water.
  • Lose the layers. Please do not go around in your birthday suit.  Dress in light, floaty layers to keep cool during the summer heatwave.
  • Stay protected. Apply sun cream and reapply every 2-3 hours.
  • Chill out, relax and enjoy.

In typical British weather form, this heatwave will probably be over before you know it, so take time to enjoy every moment.
